The other week or so when I was in my old neighborhood for a function, I stopped through beforehand to the (black) neighborhood bar for a drink, to get it on my bar list (I started from scratch with the bars; it was like #41, I believe).
I ran into an older (black) woman I know, who was there with this other regular, this older baldheaded (black) (gay) guy who was eating a burrito, since the restaurant next door the kitchen of which you can order from through a hole in the wall had started serving tacos and burritos in addition to just pizza.
So, I asked him how the burrito was.
"Not bad for barfood," he was like.
When I asked him how the quality of meat was, if it was out of the freezer or what, he said he didn't think so, but that the chicken was underseasoned, which you didn't notice in the soup, but you did notice in the tacos.
I also talked a while with the older (black) woman. It turns out she golfs, and had actually been through my hometown years ago golfing, sometime in the late '80s. I asked her if she had been through the bar on Main Street that my parents owned, and she was like, "I can't remember," and when I asked her if it was because it was so long ago, she was like, "No, I might have been, I just was drinking a little too much back then, and can't remember!"
Charles Earland's "More Today than Yesterday" was on the jukebox, and we grooved to that some and talked to music.
She also has been reading a biography of Voltaire that she can't put down.
"People say he's an atheist or he's an atheist," she was like, "But all these atheists, they believe in more than most people, it's just not the Christianity they know."

A wish of mine:
I had a strong-enough stomach to watch "Kill Bill".
The bits of it I've seen I've really liked, though I couldn't get through the gory parts. Uma Thurman is so iconic and bad-ass.
The upstairs bar at that one place had it playing on the small screen, and I had a blast watching it. Perhaps I should watch it on the small screen, so the violence isn't as overwhelming for me to watch?

Update (2 of 2): Latin.
I think I'm going to get some short lives of harlot saints to read, as well as that one romance novel about two lovers by that one humanist pope...
A guy from the Latin program this past summer was reading the romance novel by the pope, and said it was fun and a pretty easy read.

Update (1 of 2): Movie.
I did not like that "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives" movie. It had some nice moments (which I won't relate for fear of giving away spoilers; maybe I should relate them in a note to this post), but otherwise it was really uneven and flaccid. I can't believe the French awarded it the palm door.

Making fun of my one British friend.
The other week because of a department dinner on campus at a restaurant near my one (half British half Sudanese) friend's house, I texted him if he wanted to get together for a beer or (herbal) tea afterwards.
He texted back saying he couldn't, since his youngest brother would just be getting into town at that time.
I texted him back to invite his brother, he would be more than welcome.
He texted me back that it was a 7 hour flight and he'd probably be tired.
I texted him back saying that I'm sure his brother could manage, since "his grandparents survived colonization/the blitz after all."
(My one [half British half Sudanese] friend found that funny.)

Lesson of 2 Sundays ago.
I was late out the door to head downtown, so I didn't stop to put air in my tires, which were a bit on the flat side.
I road downtown, then to a coffee shop, and then was heading to meet my one friend with the cat to watch "Sister Wives" and was like 2 blocks from her house, when I rode off the edge of the pavement in an alley where it was crumbling, and automatically I heard a hissing sound. Both my tires were flat.
The people at the bikeshop said because my tires were a bit load, the outer tire must have slid and pinched the tubes. They said to always keep them inflated. That was a $30 lesson (for labor and replacement of both tubes). Erp.

Great cooking.
My last batch of black beans has really turned out to be the best. I let them soak a long time before boiling, and then towards the end of cooking cut up garlic and poblano peppers to throw in, and then last of all onions - which still have a little crunch in them. Only salt and pepper as seasoning. It's great.
