At the one (Thai) restaurant where I work now, I have been noticing for a while now that gentle humor really works well with tables of (South Asian from South Asia) customers, especially the older ones.
Like, there was this family of two (immigrant) parents and their (college kid) like last month, and when they went to order their entrees -- they were eating individually, not family-style -- each specified that the heat level of their entree should be three.
"Three, three, and three," I was like, after taking the order of the last one. "Three people, and three for everyone."
And, the parents seemed to get a kick out of that observation about threes, especially the dad.
At the end of the meal, too, they were saying how much they enjoyed the meal, and how good the food was.
"Thank you," I was like. "I was afraid that you would say that the food is a three, on a scale of one to ten!"
And, again, they got a kick out of that, especially the dad.
It really is just this gentle and very innocent humor, that seems to play well.
