An overheard conversation...

...by my one (half Sudanese) (half British) friend, the brother of the brother-sister pair, as related by him in an email, about something he overheard recently in the UK, where he's living and working again:

a few weeks ago I overheard an academic complaining that admin was asking them to phone prospective students to encourage them to sign up for the MA programme [sic]. the worst part of it he said, was not the phone call but the online form that you had to fill out afterward logging your activity and the students' responses. can you imagine!!?? i would have insisted on commission for each student i recruited! it really is messed up.

. . .

(He also says "courgette," "aubergine," and "envisage," and even very very occasionally "wank" and "wanker" and even "shag" just like in Austin Powers, only unironically, which I just find ridiculous. A few times, too, I've also heard his sister say "agony aunt," which is like a friend who you dump all of your problems on like they're a newspaper advice columnist. I like that one better.)
