Odds and Ends.

1) I studied a bit at a coffee shop run by this Syrian engineer in the north part of the city yesterday evening. This older boozy professional woman (white) was there chit-chatting with him - she seemed to be a regular - and they were talking about some wedding he'd recently been to. She asked if he kept a handkerchief in his back pocket in case he saw some woman he was interested in, "to wrap her up (i.e., veil her) and take her home".

She also talked about how her old Jewish boss and her used to go get drunk at this restaurant down the block that's not there any more, and he used to steal silverware and dishware he liked because the manager would let him get away with it and write it off as breakage and whatnot, and then one time he was really really drunk and took a dessert cart and loaded it up with shit and took off down the street back to his apartment, just wheeling it down the major arterial road in the city that's right there.

2)I was talking with my one (married) (black) dean and her assistant about Facebook, and she said a (black?) friend of her sister's wrote and tried to friend her and was like, "You have a beautiful picture, let's be friends," and she was like, "Here's this guy I don't even know and he's sleazy, so I'm going to let him into my personal life, right?", and I was like, "So what did you write back, 'Still got it, but no thanks'?", which she loved.

3) The one (black) (lesbian?) committee head liked my one joke a while ago when she asked me to come to a graduate council meeting to vouch for how the committee's done a good job gathering feedback (which I think is true), and since student-administration relations can be hostile right now, I said I would grab the tomatoes out of mid-air as they were hurled at her.

Anyhow, today I apologize for my recent (successful) spate of memos to the committee, and was like, "Sorry if I've been a bit intense," and she, as she was putting on her leather jacket, was like, "No worries, I'm pretty intense too," and I was like, "And that's even before you put on your leather jacket," which she loved.

Update - Ribbing the British.

I e-mailed a British friend about the recent picture of Obamas and the queen:

Look at that picture... and how young lovely and multicultural america is, and how old white shrivelled and rich your wonderful kingdom is...

So eat it, Percy.

(His name isn't Percy, by the way.)

Reply:

you are quite right though. if there's one thing the english are not, it has to be 'cool.' well, that and obese.

Snap!

Anyhow, I can't wait to see that one French student I know, and tell him that we had blacks flipping cars in our cities 40 years ago, and now they run the place, so maybe if the French are lucky then around 2050 they'll have a Moroccan at the head of their country.

Addendum

I forgot --

At the dinner I saw my one Belgian friend who is struggling with his girlfriend-inaugurated vegeatarianism. I asked him how it was going, and he said that when he was home over spring break, his mother convinced him to eat a rabbit that was raised by their neighbor, since they knew it had been treated well and lived off grass and hay from the guy's farm.

"I'm not dogmatic about it," he was like.

Also, his mother said that tofu and seitan and beans must be boring, and he threw it in her face (mildly, of course, he's Belgian) that she pretty much eats three meats, chicken and beef and pork, and she has enough way to prepare them so they're not boring, so why should vegetarian food be boring.

Dinner.

Last night I went to a lecture on Greco-Roman monotheism by a visiting French prof and got in on the free Italian dinner downtown afterwards. She wore lots of rings, and had long sweeping curly hair that was a mix of gray and black, kind of like Judy Collins.

I was on the opposite side of the table, and at the end of the night when someone got up to smoke, she called across the table to me and patted the seat next to her, which really impressed me - she made sure to talk to all of the students there that evening, which was simply wonderful. We talked quite a bit, and it turned out that she was Jewish and had always been interested in studying Judaism and Early Christianity, but long ago had made a decision to start studying topics related to those religions from the primary basis of issues in Greek and Roman religion, since she felt that if she started studying them directly she'd become too involved and it just wouldn't be good for her or conducive to good scholarship.

Later, since I had mentioned who my advisor was and she said she was going to meet with her tomorrow because they've been working from opposite ends on this one Christian inscription that uses pagan motifs, she asked me if she checks e-mail often, or if she should try to call her, since they still had to confirm a time.

"Oh, just e-mail her," I was like, "She's on e-mail all the time. I e-mailed her an article a friend forwarded me about Obama last night, and when I met with her today, she had already had a chance to read it and mentioned it to me."

"Oh!", she was like, "Zat is wonderful, my students, zey never send me articles about Sarko-zee!", and she laughed wistfully.

Call.

Like last week I was taking a piss and called someone on the cell phone, and they had a hard time hearing, so when I called one of my friends at school Sunday night,, I did it just as I had stoppped pissing, but he was like, "So what are you up to?", and I started laughing really hard, and when he asked why, I was like, "Well, actually, shaking the last few drops of piss off my dick."

2 things.

1) I had a dream last night that I got a $300 bill from my landlord for replacing the stopper in my toilet (which really happened in real life).

2) Not being able to use the 5-button on my cell phone too easily (it was very hard to push it down) made me start using #1s for ls, and realize that I spelled "karaoke" and "drinks" a lot when I texted (almost never use js).

How lovely.

This weekend it was often springline, and then today it's cold and rainy and I was thinking how nice it would be to fry up some brussel sprouts in butter, and then it turned out that a store near me had them on sale for 79 cents a pound! I got like a pound, and will eat them tonight.
